Pair of 18ct white gold, diamond, ruby and onyx 'Le Baiser du Dragon' earrings, Cartier, 2004, each surmount designed as a geometric motif, pave-set with brilliant-cut diamonds and a black onyx plaque, suspending a fringe of barrel-shaped onyx and rubies to diamond drops, the diamonds together weighing approximately 2.75 carats, length approximately 75 mm, signed Cartier, numbered 44966A, French assay and maker's marks, post and clip fittings.

  • Onyx - Onyx is a form of agate, used from antiquity and popular again in the 1920s and 30s. European onyx is generally green, but can be many other colours, and can contain bands of black and/or white.

    This multicoloured stone is widely used for table tops, lamp bases and in jewellery. Some types of onyx are also used for cameos of which the upper white layer is cut away to reveal the colour beneath.
