Little is known about Crisp's early life and training. but he came from a region with a rich tradition in ceramics, known as the Staffordshire Potteries. He likely had exposure to the pottery industry from an early age. Crisp began his career as a ceramics designer at the Wilkinson Pottery Company, a renowned pottery manufacturer based in Burslem, Staffordshire, England. He is believed to have worked for Wilkinson pottery for several decades, from the 1930s to the 1960s.
