Deborah Halpern was born in 1957 in Melbourne. She studied journalism at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, painting at the Caulfield Institute of Technology and Fine Arts at Latrobe University. She trained in ceramics as a student at the 'Potter's School' and as an apprentice at her mother's workshop, Sylha Ceramics. She is represented in the National Gallery of Victoria and numerous regional galleries.
