Norman Alfred Williams Lindsay was born in Creswick, Victoria, in 1879. He first came to prominence as an illustrator on the 'Bulletin'. Like his brother Lionel, he was a prolific writer with many books to his credit. Author of the children’s classic The Magic Pudding he produced works across a wide range of mediums including pen, etchings, watercolour, oil and sculpture in bronze and concrete. His nudes were particularly controversial in their era. He was an illustrator for the Sydney Bulletin for 50 years. Films include Age of Consent (1969) adapted from his 1938 novel, starring James Mason and Helen Mirren, and Sirens (1994), starring Sam Neill, a fictionalised version of Lindsay’s life. His former home in Faulconbridge, NSW is now the Norman Lindsay Gallery and Museum.
