Cooks Voyages, Botany Bay & Boxing: the London Chronicle, November 12-14, 1789: Concluding in this issue is the lengthy article (started in the 5-7 Nov. edition) concerning 'A Voyage round the World....' by Captain Nathaniel Portlock, who had accompanied Captain James Cook on his Third Voyage to the Pacific. It also includes an extensive coverage of the latest trial of 'The notorious D'Arcy Wentworth'. At the conclusion of the case the prosecutor informed the judge: 'My Lord, Mr. Wentworth, the prisoner at the Bar, has taken a passage to go in a fleet to Botany Bay and has obtained an appointment in it as Assistant Surgeon and desires to be discharged immediately'. An interesting third article describes the terms and conditions for the boxing match between Thomas Johnson and 'Big Ben' Benjamin Brain. The prize was to be a massive £500, but the fight did not take place. Johnson was referred to as the Champion of England between 1784 and 1791.
