A Chinese spinach jade circular box and cover, Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), 18th century, of lotus form, the cover carved as a lotus pod, with circular nodes simulating seeds, encased by overlapping lotus petals to the box and cover in low relief, with a straight foot rim, with wooden stand, 9 cm diameter. Provenance: Purchased at or prior to 1976, old Sotheby's sticker, lot 481 attached, Literature, illustrated in Art and Australia, Vol. 3, no. 4, p.258. The Ming Dynasty was established by Zhu Yuanzhang, a former Buddhist monk who became a rebel leader and eventually overthrew the Mongol Yuan Dynasty. During the Ming Dynasty, China experienced a period of relative stability and prosperity. The government was centralized and bureaucratic, with the emperor at the top of the hierarchy. The Ming Dynasty is known for its cultural achievements, including the development of porcelain, the invention of movable type printing, and the construction of the Great Wall of China.
