A 1947 Jane Brenkley carved and decorated waka huia, the hinged lid carved with a central stylised figure flanked by two tiki form masks, cat's eye inserts, the ground with spiral designs, the exterior entirely decorated with further stylised Maori designs, the interior lid poker worked and painted with a lakeside scene of whare, canoe and figure, etc., and the verse, signed and dated 1947, 'From Quiet Homes and Small Beginning, Out to the Undiscovered Ends, There's Nothing Worth the Wear of Winning but Laughter and the Love of Friends'. The top rim with further verse, 'Kia Ora, Fear Nothing, Make the Best of Everything. Ka Toa. Man is Man, and Master of his Fate'. 50 x 14 x 12 cm. A good example in original vintage condition.
