A George III musical bracket clock, J Thwaites, London, circa 1811, the mahogany brass lined bell top case with rococo finials, each angle mounted with brass herms trailing leafy buds. The sides with brass handles above foliate case sound frets with quarter frets to the brass lined front and rear doors. The moulded base raised on leafy scroll cast brass feet. The enamel one piece dial with two smaller subsidiary dials in break arch, and strike/not strike and the tune selector dial. Main dial with Roman and Arabic chapter ring, signed J. Thwaites- London- no. 4763. Blued steel hands throughout. The triple fusee movement with verge escapement, hour striking on bell, the music playing on twelve bells on a six tune musical barrel. The glass inset rear door opening to a rectangular plate engraved with scrolling foliage, 70 cm high, 40 cm wide, 30 cm deep. Provenance: 'Important Clocks', Christie's London, July 11, 2003. Other Notes: John Thwaites was a prolific Clockmaker and made a large number of clock movements for the well known Clockmakers of the time including Dutton, Allam, Barraud and Debois. John Thwaites was master of the Clockmakers Company in 1815, 1819 and 1820.

- Circa - A Latin term meaning 'about', often used in the antique trade to give an approximate date for the piece, usually considered to be five years on either side of the circa year. Thus, circa 1900 means the piece was made about 1900, probably between 1895 and 1905. The expression is sometimes abbreviated to c.1900.
- Fusee - The fusee movement was used in clocks and pocket watches from the mid 17th century. The fusee is a cone shaped drum within the works that is linked to the barrel of the spring, usually by a length of chain.
As the mainspring loses its tension over time, the cone shaped barrel compensates for this by increasing the tension, by pulling the mainspring tighter, thus ensuring the time remains constant.
Use of the fusee in clocks was superseded by the "going barrel" in the mid 19th century and for pocket watches at the beginning of the 19th century.
The fusee continued to be used in marine chronometers until the 1970s.
- Mahogany - Mahogany is a dense, close grained red-coloured timber from the West Indies and Central America. It was first imported into Europe in the the early 18th century and its use continued through the 19th century. It was popular for furniture making because of its strength, the wide boards available, the distinctive grain on some boards, termed flame mahogany and the rich warm colour of the timber when it was polished.. The "flame" was produced where a limb grew out from the trunk of the tree, and this timber was usually sliced into veneers for feature panels on doors, backs and cornices.
Some terms used to describe mahogany relate to the country from which it originally came, such as "Cuban" mahogany, "Honduras" mahogany etc. However unless the wood has been tested the names assigned are more a selling feature, rather than a true indication of the timber's origin.
- Chapter Ring - A separate metal plate on the face of a clock, on which the numerals for the hours and sometimes parts of the hours, are displayed, usually wheel shaped and sitting on top of the dial plate. The chapter ring is often a feature of the clock and can be silvered or enamelled to stand as a contrast to its background. The hours are usually shown in Roman numerals, although in the late 19th and earlt 20th century, Arabic numerals became fashionable.
- Finial - An architectural decoration, found on the upper parts of of an object. On furniture they are usually found on pediments, canopies and shelf supports. On smaller ceramic or silver items, such as spoons, they may decorate the top of the item itself, or the lid or cover where they provide a useful handle for removal.
Finials have a variety of shapes and forms. They may be urn-shaped, baluster shaped round or spiral, but usually taper into an upper point. Many real life shapes may also be used as finials, such as pineapples, berries, pinecones, buds, lotus and acorns. Sometimes animals such as a lion are depicted, or fish and dolphins.

- Foliate - Decorated with leaves or leaf-like forms.
- Verge Escapement - A verge escapement is an early mechanical escapement used in clocks and other timekeeping devices. It is an early form of the escapement mechanism, which is used to regulate the movement of the hands of a clock or watch. The verge escapement consists of a vertical shaft called the verge, which is mounted on the clock's main plate. Attached to the verge are two pallets, which engage with the teeth of the escape wheel. As the escape wheel turns, the pallets alternately lock and release it, allowing the movement of the clock to be regulated. The verge escapement was widely used in early mechanical clocks, but it was eventually replaced by the more accurate and reliable anchor escapement.
- Hour Striking / Half Hour Striking - An hour striking clock chimes on the hour to indicate the time. The striking mechanism consists of a series of gears and hammers that are set in motion by the clock's movement and are designed to strike a bell or gong to mark the passing of time.
An hour striking clock will strike once on the first hour, twice on the second hour, and so on, up to twelve strikes at noon and midnight. In a half hour striking clock, the clock will strike once on the half hour, and the number of strikes on the hour corresponds to the number of hours passed since the previous half hour.
- Barrel (in a Clock) - In a clock or watch, the barrel is a cylindrical component that stores the energy from the mainspring. As the mainspring is wound, it stores energy in the barrel. As the clock or watch runs, the energy is gradually released from the barrel, turning the clock's gears and keeping the time.
The barrel is typically located near the centre of the movement (the mechanism that powers the clock) and is connected to the center wheel, which drives the rest of the gears. The barrel typically has teeth on its outer surface that mesh with the gears in the movement, allowing it to transmit energy to the rest of the clock. Some barrels are designed to be wound by hand, while others are automatically wound by the motion of the wearer's arm.
- Movement - The technical name for the workings of a clock or watch, and does not include the dial or case.
