A large Chinese 'Changsha' ewer, Tang Dynasty (618-907), the ewer of ovoid form with a cylindrical neck with a flaring mouth rim, with a large strap-handle to the rear and two smaller strap-handles to the sides, each formed from three rolled lengths of clay joined together, with an octagonal tapered spout to the shoulder at the front. Below the two side handles and the spout is a relief moulded applique panel depicting grape vines, the appliques splashed with brown, the whole covered in a pale olive green crackled glaze, 23.5 cm high, 17 cm wide

    Sometimes the words "ewer" and "pitcher" are used interchangably, but a pitcher is generally considered to be a jug, and would have a wide mouth, and a gently tapering body.
