A World War I watch fob, the enamelled first lieutenant's dress uniform shoulder 'pip', hanging from a black ribbon with 9ct rose gold mounts. The pip reverse engraved '10/1149 Lieut. R. J. Kemp Promoted on the field 1st. January 1917 Fleurbaix. France Major. Saxby'. Note: Richard John Kemp (1889-1964) left New Zealand in 1914, serving with the Engineers at Gallipoli. He was then posted to the Maori Pioneers Battalion and was badly wounded in 1917. Conrad Gordon Saxby (DSO, MiD) fought in the Anglo-Boer War and then with the Auckland Mounted Rifles (13/2150) being subsequently CO of the Maori Pioneers, dying of disease in the UK in 1918 - a victim of the 1918 'flu epidemic.
