A Chinese Qing Dynasty Tongzhi to Guangxu period yellow ground peony Planter, Chinese porcelain planter decorated with tree peonies and in yellow, a colour associated with the Imperial family. Known in China since at least the 9th century BC, and beloved by Chinese artists and poets, the tree peony (mudan) was considered the Queen of flowers, symbolizing spring and a harbinger of good luck. The flowers are closely associated with royalty because they have been grown in Imperial gardens since the Sui dynasty (581-618). It symbolizes wealth and honour in the sense of high rank, having an official position, or high social status. In China, yellow had a special symbolic meaning and was the centre of the five colours. Symbolizing the colour of earth, yellow has been privileged by five legendary emperors, height 36 cm, diameter 39.5 cm
