A Malangan figure, New Ireland. Malangan ceremonies are typically performed to honour the dead. This figure depicts a person with arms extended outwards and pointing fingers. Birds are often depicted with Malangan carvings. The figure has eyes made of shells and plant fibre for hair. Height 72.7 cm, width 55 cm, depth 10 cm.
