A Phemba maternity figure, Democratic Republic of Congo. Yombe figures were often placed upon shrines to honour ancestral mothers. This figure is carved from wood and has a rich brown patina. The female figure is bare-breasted, she sits with her legs crossed. Upon her lap is a small child. The figure is mounted on a small cube stand. Height 18 cm, width 59 mm, depth 5.9 cm
