Race horse of the year Award: a horse shoe mounted on a wooden plinth together with a sterling silver plaque engraved 'Race horse of the year 1970: 71 Gay Icarus presented to C.L. Beechey 28th October 1971'. 15 cm high. Provenance: The Estate of Cyril Beechey, thence the family by descent. This award originally started as the VRC Award and was renamed Australia's Champion racehorse in 1982. The Australian Champion racehorse of the year is awarded to the Thoroughbred horse which is voted to be the champion horse within an Australian racing season. The award is open to all horses racing within Australia, regardless of age and sex, and includes overseas performances.
