Jack Dempsey V Luis Firpo: 1923 'Official programme, World's Heavyweight Championship, polo grounds, Jack Dempsey Luis Firpo, Friday evening, September 14, 1923', Fair/Good condition. Rare. [Jack Dempsey, the 'Manassa Mauler,' had many important fights in his long career, but one of the most defining bouts was when he was matched up against Luis angel Firpo on September 14, 1923. Firpo would be the first Latin American to challenge for a Heavyweight title, and the match was attended by 80,000 people in New York city. Dempsey was knocked to one knee quickly, but recovered and went to drop Firpo seven times before the end of round one. Just before the end of the round, Firpo knocked Dempsey out of the ring and the boxing writers helped Dempsey get back in the ring. The referee's count was four, but people watching the fight claim it was fourteen seconds before Dempsey got back in the ring; regardless, the fight went on, and Dempsey won by knockout in the second round]
