A mauchline ware knitting ball, this mauchline piece was used while knitting or doing crochet work. The ball opens to two halves and a ball of wool or yarn was placed in it. The end of the wool was fed through the central hole and the ball was closed. The other 2 holes would have held a piece of string that was then looped around the knitter's neck. This way, the worker could knit or crochet with this ball suspended from their neck and the ball of wool would not 'Run away'. The image on the piece shows boo-backed bridge in Strathaven. The piece is in excellent condition with the original varnish finish in great condition. The two halves close very snugly. Height 8.5 cm, width 8.5 cm
