A circa 1900 Sherwin & Cotton Maori portrait tile of the chief 'Matene Te Nga', depicted with full moko and in a korowai (cloak), the chief of Ngati Maru iwi, entitled top left, the artist George Cartlidge's monogram bottom right, maker's marks to reverse. 22.5 x 15 cm. Professional restoration, in old rewarewa frame, the reverse with outline and starting of Maori carved detail.
