A stone pestle, Western Provence, Solomon Islands, 19th century. Used for grinding foods and plant fibres. This pestle has been carved from a single piece of stone. It is a long cylindrical form with a gradual flare runnning down to the curved end. The handle has been carved to depict two forms in a squat position with arms raised upwards to the top. Length 40.8 cm, depth 6.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, Aotearoa. Previously of a private collection Honiara, Solomon Islands
