scratch built river cargo boat 'Nell', beautifully crafted single piece carved cedar hull, pine deck, cedar superstructure, and brass funnel fitted with a pre-war field coil DC motor. Inset glass buttons, form portholes. Some scratches and paint losses to hull and rudder catch missing, otherwise good attractive patina. Length 72 cm

- Scratch Built - A scratch built model is one that is built "from scratch", i.e. from the raw materials, rather than one purchased and built from a kit of parts, or purchased pre-assembled.
- Patination / Patina - In broad terms, patination refers to the exterior surface appearance of the timber, the effect of fading caused by exposure to sunlight and air over the course of a century or more, changing the piece to a soft, mellow colour.
As patina is very difficult to replicate, it is one of the most important guides to determining the age of furniture.
Patina is also the term applied to the bloom or film found on old bronzes due to oxidisation.
