A photograph album titled 'Glimpses of Nauru and Ocean Islands' and containing more than 350 small-format photographs (some assembled into panoramas). Extensively annotated with dates ranging from 1930 to 1935 the album records the activities of staff working for the British Phosphate Company, their families, the natives - both at work and in traditional settings - the constructions, mining, social and leisure activities. All personnel are named, many images are dated. Beginning with the arrival in September 1930 aboard M.V. Clydebank some of the other events noted include waterfront scenes Feb.-April 1931, various ship arrivals, 'My Quarters 'Londonderry' on Nauru', the 'Laboratory Boy Luan Fook', 'Hum Dung and Anui - Office Boys', London Missionary Society Activities at the church at Yangor, the Leper Station Chapel, the Sunday School class, the Chinese Theatre, the Opening of Buada Lagoon Chapel (April 1931), Yangor Settlement, Athletic Sports, wrecks at Ocean Island, A wedding reception, cricket at The Residency, 'Gilbertese Dances', 'A Banaban Wedding', 'Native types and dresses', Tabiang Village, Kanaka Married Quarters, Chinese Procession, Panorama from 'O.T. Wreck', means of rail transport, Kanaka Hospital, fancy dress party aboard 'Nauru Chief' Jan.1933, Gilbert Island scenes, Mining the Phosphate, etc. A most comprehensive collection.
