Hans Heysen (1877 - 1968) full signature on a one-page letter, dated 'Jan.22nd, Hahndorf' (circa 1940) to a 'Miss Fern' advising that he had just sent her three watercolours which he hopes 'may fall in with your client's wishes'. He also advises that 'There are two White Gum subjects - watercolours which really belong to a much earlier date - somewhere round about 1920 - but both have only just been completed.' A fascinating document entirely in the artist's own hand.

- Circa - A Latin term meaning 'about', often used in the antique trade to give an approximate date for the piece, usually considered to be five years on either side of the circa year. Thus, circa 1900 means the piece was made about 1900, probably between 1895 and 1905. The expression is sometimes abbreviated to c.1900.
