H.M.A.S. Australia 9ct yellow gold brooch showing the famed battlecruiser with Australian map suspended beneath, circa 1913. Made by Willis & Sons of Melbourne. Stamped '9.W.' with unicorn mark. 4.5 cm wide, 2.4 grams. H.M.A.S. Australia was one of three Indefatigable-class battlecruisers built for the defence of the British Empire. Ordered by the Australian government in 1909, she was launched in 1911, and commissioned as flagship of the fledgling Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in 1913. This superb brooch is the only example known to US.
