A Russian silver and niello cigarette case, .875 silver (84 zol.), St Petersburg, with combined city and standard mark (1882-1899) rectangular with rounded corners and gilt interior, with a troika scene to, the hinged cover surrounded by foliate scrollwork on stippled ground, the base with navette reserve monogrammed Ms in script, surrounded by checker-board design and scrolls, marked to, the interior and with maker's mark Np (Cyrillic). Weight 162g length 10.5 cm, width 7.5 cm

  • Niello - A compound made up of lead silver copper and sulphur that is black in colour, and applied to the engraved areas of silver items, thus highlighting the engraving by making the black niello detail stand out from the silver background. It was used on edged weapons from the Renaisance onwards, and also by Russian crafstmen of the19th century.
  • Navette - Navette, the French word for (weaver's) shuttle, means shuttle shaped, and is used to describe shapes in jewellery, ceramics and silver.
  • Foliate - Decorated with leaves or leaf-like forms.
