An antique French walnut dough bin, late 18th to early 19th century, the rectangular two plank top with thumb nail moulded edge, sliding open to reveal a trough-shaped bin with tapered sides, with a relief carved shell and floral panel to, the long side, without stand, on later bun feet, with fine patination. Height 40 cm, length 108 cm, width 58 cm

  • Patination / Patina - In broad terms, patination refers to the exterior surface appearance of the timber, the effect of fading caused by exposure to sunlight and air over the course of a century or more, changing the piece to a soft, mellow colour.

    As patina is very difficult to replicate, it is one of the most important guides to determining the age of furniture.

    Patina is also the term applied to the bloom or film found on old bronzes due to oxidisation.
  • Bun Feet - Similar to ball feet, though somewhat compressed or flattened in appearance. Introduced during the late 17th century, but they have been used on furniture up to the present day.
