Exceptionally rare 1936 Ranfurly shield Defenders trophy, awarded by the citizens of Dunedin. In the form of a miniature rugby pitch with rectangular shaped wooden base, inset greenstone panel with standing rugby player, Ranfurly shield in front and posts to either end, and oval plaque to the front, 30 cm W, together with a leather ball of the same period, indistinctly signed by various players. . |Roy Nieper was an Otago stalwart, and played for the Southern club & Otago for many years. A member of the 1935 first Otago team to win the shield defeating canterbury 15-6, they defended it four times further that season ending the year as holders. As well as Roy other names in the team included All Blacks Dave Trevathan and Chris Saxton. These three along with others have their names on the old leather ball that comes with this lot
