- Hammered - A hammered finish on metal wares is achieved by striking the surface of the metal with a hammer to create a series of small, uniform indentations. The indentations can be made in a variety of patterns and depths. The resulting surface texture can vary from a subtle, almost imperceptible texture to a highly textured surface with a strong, pronounced pattern.
The hammered finish adds texture and visual interest to metal objects such as bowls, vases, and other decorative items. It can also be used to add grip or reduce glare on tools, weapons, and other functional metal objects.
A hammered finish can be applied to a range of metals, including copper, brass, silver, and gold.
- Faux - A French word meaning "false", but when used in decorative arts, the intention is not to deceive, but to simulate the decorative effects of the more expensive material it is imitating. The term " faux bois" meaning "false wood" refers to a furniture item that has been decorated with a marked grain (woodgrain finish) to imitate a more expensive timber.
- Lustre Ware - Lustre decoration on ceramics is created by painting a thin deposit of metal oxide such as gold, silver or copper onto the surface, and then firing the item again, so that metal oxide forms a thin film on the surface. The finished effect is a shiny metallic surface. The technique was used in the 19th century by potteries such as Crown Devon, Grimwades, Maling, and Royal Doulton. However the best known use was by Wedgwood for its Fairyland lustre.
