Postcard from Titanic: Tragic News from Southampton, 1912

A remarkable postcard sent on the night the Titanic hit the iceberg Sent from Southampton, Titanic's port of departure, and dated 15/4/1912, the card was written during the hours between news of the collision became known, but before it became clear that the ship and hundreds of lives would be lost. The correspondent writes 'I expect you have read of her disaster, it is very terrible, but so far all are safe, she is proceeding to Halifax Nova Scotia under her own steam, so that is reassuring to US all.', RMS Titanic sank on 15 April 1912 in the north Atlantic Ocean. The largest ocean liner in service at the time, Titanic was four days into her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York city, with an estimated 2224 people on board when she struck an iceberg at 23:40 (ship's time), on 14 April. Her sinking two hours and forty minutes later at 02:20 ship's time (05:18 GMT) on 15 April, resulted in the deaths of more than 1500 people, making it one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history.
