Two 19th century Austro-Hungarian silver double handled dishes, the first with openwork sides of nut and leaf, and shell scroll handles, central applied nutmegs cartouche, on oval foot, date mark for 1864 and maker's mark rubbed, width 31 cm. The second rectangular with openwork roses to the sides and and applied scrolling device to the centre, on rectangular domed base, date and town mark for Vienna 1840, width 29.5 cm. Weight combined: 515 gm. (2)

It may be carved into the back of a chair or the top of a sideboard, or present on a piece of silver or jewellery, and contain the initials of the original owner, heraldic symbols, or some other inscription, such as the details of a presentation.
In ceramics the term defines the central area of a vase or similar with a decorative border in one of the shapes above, into which a decorative scene or figures have been painted.
