Antique Silver Gilt Chalcedony Writing Set by Storr & Mortimer

An antique silver gilt and chalcedony cased writing set, retailed through Storr & Mortimer, late 1830s, letter opener, pen with nib, seal and wax knife, with paper label of Storr & Mortimer, 156 New Bond Street Factory, 17 Harrison Street, Grays Inn, items unmarked, NOTE, Storr and Mortimer were manufacturing and retail goldsmiths, jewellers and silversmiths with an influential and elite clientele. Renowned silversmith Paul Storr, whose clients included aristocracy and royalty, went into partnership with jewellery retailer John Mortimer producing exquisite goods to sell in their New Bond Street store, London's most prestigious address. Storr & Mortimer moved to new premises at 156 New Bond Street in 1838, just prior to the retirement of Paul Storr. The label on the silk and velvet lined box corresponds with this period. A near identical Storr & Mortimer writing set, previously in the collection of The Prince of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Germany can be seen in The Cleveland Museum of Art, accession number: 2009.39.
