A stunning antique carved Mother of pearl fan, sumptuously hand painted and crafted in three coloured 18ct gold and mounded with diamonds, rubies and emerald. Most likely French, and made as a special commission probably for a member of the Russian aristocracy, 18th/19th century. By far the finest example ever seen in our rooms. 23 cm high, 40 cm wide

- Emeralds - Emeralds have been used in jewellery making for thousands of years, and are prized for their deep green colour, which is caused by the presence of chromium and vanadium in the mineral beryl. Because of their rare colour, emeralds are often more valuable than diamonds of a similar size and quality. They can also be used in combination with other gems, such as diamonds, to create intricate and beautiful designs.
- Mother-Of-Pearl - Mother-of-pearl, technical name "nacre", is the inner layer of a sea shell. The iridescent colours and strength of this material were widely used in the nineteenth century as an inlay in jewellery, furniture, (especially papier mache furniture) and musical instruments.
In the early 1900s it was used to make pearl buttons. Mother-of-pearl is a soft material that is easily cut or engraved.
Nowadays it is a by-product of the oyster, freshwater pearl mussel and abalone industries.
