A Michael Payne 'Osaka Expo' chair, 1970. The design features an inspired combination of chrome steel, bent plywood and black leather upholstery, height 87.5 cm, width 60 cm, diameter 51 cm Whanganui architect Michael Payne was offered the chance to design the New Zealand pavilion at the 1970 Osaka Expo. What resulted was a dynamic and engaging space called 'The Geyser Room'. The exhibition showcased the best locally produced products and was furnished with chairs designed by Payne. It also centred around an impressive floor to ceiling illuminated geyser. The chair Payne designed for the Geyser room is now affectionately known as the Osaka Expo chair. It has since become one of New Zealand's most celebrated, architect designed chairs, height 91 cm, width 59 cm, diameter 50 cm
