A circa 1880 New Zealand silver & whale bone 'Ikolaki' whaling interest brooch, formed as a harpoon with silver ribbon suspended on wire rope with fret cut letters 'IKOLAKI', length 6.5 cm. Note: Papers Past details a fishing report in 1868 of Mr Buchanan's Fishery 'Ikolaki' of Akoroa. Another reference dated 1844 details 'We regret to announce the loss of this vessel at a whaling station, called Ikolaki, situated to the south of Akaroa'.
