Very fine Jiaqing mark and period (1796-1820), Chinese green-ground famille rose lobed tea-tray, the interior with a cartouche with gilt borders inscribed with a long poem in praise of good tea, dated to Jiaqing dingsi year (1797), the sides delicately enamelled with meandering lotus and other floral scrolls, all reserved on a pale-green ground, raised on four gilt bracket feet on wood stand. - Cartouche - An ornamental panel in the form of of a shield, oval or rectangular scroll with curling edges. It may be carved into the back of a chair or the top of a sideboard, or present on a piece of silver or jewellery, and contain the initials of the original owner, heraldic symbols, or some other inscription, such as the details of a presentation.
In ceramics the term defines the central area of a vase or similar with a decorative border in one of the shapes above, into which a decorative scene or figures have been painted.
- Quatrefoil - A stylised four-circle design, itself contained within a larger circle, with Gothic origins and often seen as window designs in ecclesiastical architecture. The use of the motif was popular in Gothic Revival furniture of the 19th century.
