A magnificent early 18th century greenstone tiki, of truly exceptional size and quality. Carved for a great Maori chief. Stone carved, carver unknown, tribe or iwi unknown. Red wax eyes added sometime after Captain Cook's arrival. One of the great tikis in the world. Only the odd European collector or Museum would have a tiki of equal importance. The vendor's family have had it for at least 100 years. The vendor's great-grandfather was a major builder who built colonial buildings all over the North Island around the turn of the century (1900 period). The great-grandfather left the family no historical of where he acquired it. Length 16 cm. Width 7.5 cm. Depth 1-1.5 cm
