A Chinese Peking glass snuff bottle, late Qing Dynasty, late 19th century, the baluster shaped bottle with a waisted neck, in white opaque glass and finely painted in coloured enamels with exotic ho ho birds sitting on a rock amidst peony blooms, with coloured borders to the collar and base, and a mottled lapis blue and rope embellished brass stopper; signed underside. Height 8 cm

  • Ho Ho Bird - The ho ho bird is a mythological bird of the East, that in appearance is a composite of many birds including the head of a pheasant, the body of a mandarin duck and the tail of a peacock.

    It is used as a decorative motif in both European and Eastern furnishings and decorative arts, especially on ceramics and as part of the carved frame of mirrors.
