A rare polychromed limestone figure of the virgin and child, French, 16th century. 110 cm high, 43 cm high, 26 cm deep. A comparable polychrome decorated limestone example was sold at Sothebys New York, 25/1/07, lot 226. This figure is slightly later in date being earley 16th century, but has similarly thick parted hair and deeply carved flowing drapery. A further carved wood Virgin and Child circa 1500 was sold at Sothebys, London 7/7/06 (lot 24).
