A Chinese carved celadon-jade marriage bowl, Qianlong four-character incised seal mark to the base, Qing Dynasty, the stone of greenishceladon tone with natural inclusion, gently rising from a shallow foot rim, carved intricately to the centre in high relief with two carps, the exterior punctuated by a triple bow-string band, 13.4 cm diam. 2.2 cm high, 265g. The Ming Dynasty is known for its cultural achievements, including the development of porcelain, the invention of movable type printing, and the construction of the Great Wall of China.

  • Qing Dynasty - The Qing Dynasty was the last imperial dynasty of China, ruling from 1644 to 1912. It was established by the Manchu people, who originated from the northeastern region of China. The Qing Dynasty was preceded by the Ming Dynasty and followed by the Republic of China.
  • Incised - A record of a name, date or inscription, or a decoration scratched into a surface, usually of a glass or ceramic item with a blunt instrument to make a coarse indentation. Compare with engraving where the surface is cut with a sharp instrument such as a metal needle or rotating tool to achieve a fine indentation.
