Janson, 19th century sculpture, New York 1985, p. 179-181. Other Notes: The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (French, 1834-1904) and Gustave Eiffel (French, 1832-1923), was a gift of friendship from France to the United States and commemorates the centenary of the American Declaration of Independence. On June 30th, 1878 the completed head of the statue was shown at the Paris Exposition in the garden of the Tocadéro Palace. Being responsible for the financing of the statue, the French people initiated charitable lotteries, public donations and various forms of entertainment to raise the sum of 2.250.000 Francs. The present work is most probably one of the miniatures which were sold at the Paris Exposition in 1878 for raising the construction funds.

- Bronze - An alloy of copper and tin, traditionally in the proportions of about 9 parts of copper to 1 part of tin.
The discovery of bronze in Western Asia in the 4th century enabled people to create metal objects which were superior to those previoulsy possible because of its strength and hardness, and it has been used throughout the world for weapons, coins, tools, statuary and other decorative items.
It is very fluid in a molten state, and its hardness, strength when set, and non-corrosive properties makes it most suitable for casting sculpture.
