Pair of 18ct white gold, south sea pearl, diamond and Mother-of-pearl 'Palais Russian Spirit' pendant earrings, Paspaley, each surmount centring a pair of mother-of-pearl plaques framed by pave-set brilliant-cut diamonds terminating in a claw-set rose diamond suspending a 12.00 x 13.00 mm cultured pearl swing drop from a pave-set diamond cap, the diamonds together weighing 0.93 carats, length approximately 40 mm, signed Paspaley, fold back post and clip fittings. Accompanied by a Paspaley certificate and box.

  • Mother-Of-Pearl - Mother-of-pearl, technical name "nacre", is the inner layer of a sea shell. The iridescent colours and strength of this material were widely used in the nineteenth century as an inlay in jewellery, furniture, (especially papier mache furniture) and musical instruments.

    In the early 1900s it was used to make pearl buttons. Mother-of-pearl is a soft material that is easily cut or engraved.

    Nowadays it is a by-product of the oyster, freshwater pearl mussel and abalone industries.
  • Claw Set Jewellery - The description "claw set" in jewellery refers to a setting where the gemstone is held in place by metal prongs that resemble claws. These prongs are bent over the edges of the gemstone to secure it in the setting. This type of setting is commonly used for diamonds and other precious stones.
