18ct gold and lapis lazuli 'Alhambra' necklace, Van Cleef & Arpels, designed as a trace chain highlighted at intervals with lapis lazuli four leaf clover motifs framed by a beaded surround completed by a bolt ring clasp, length approximately 800 mm, signed VCA for Van Cleef & Arpels, French assay and maker's marks, numbered B 4050 L132. Accompanied by a Van Cleef & Arpels pouch.

    It is mined in Afghanistan, Siberia, Chile, USA and Burma. The mines in north-eastern Afghanistan are the largest source of lapis lazuli, and have been operating for over 6,000 years.

    They were the source of the stone for the ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman civilsations.
